Where Do I Leave a Review for Orange Is the New Black

Orange Is the New Black (TV Series 2013–2019) Poster

9 /10

Ane of Netflix's first dandy shows

Alarm: Spoilers

Orange is the New Black was one of the first Netflix original shows. Luckily, it was really great with great storylines. When the show showtime came out, information technology was groundbreaking. Information technology had a very diverse bandage, all of which had keen character arcs. Even the guards had good stories. I loved the flashbacks, which gave context to unlike stories. The first six seasons were just amazing. Flavour seven I think leaned a little too heavy on the social issues which detracted from the overall story. I also really disliked Piper and Alex in the last few seasons. Overall groovy show and i of Netflix's first peachy shows.

Not equally funny every bit information technology used to be

Warning: Spoilers

Flavor vii is going a tad flake overboard trying to hitting all the political hot push button issues. I'm all for trying to get the message out only every storyline deals with an unfortunate consequence and information technology'south kinda depressing. > You lot've got female genital mutilation, unlawful deportation, poor treatment by ice agents to immigrants beingness held, the "me too" movement both the cause and the effect and the validity on both sides of the story. The illegal immigrant mother getting her children taken away, etc. > I still like the show but it has completely changed information technology doesn't seem like a work of fiction anymore. Its heavy and feels more like a platform for political awareness.

Great...for v seasons. Watching Season half-dozen was a job and Flavour 7 was an ordeal.

(Updated later Flavor vii)

The story of your boilerplate early-30s female yuppie who gets sent to prison house for 15 months for a crime she committed 10 years earlier. Flavour 1 Episode ane shows her checking into the prison, and the rest is what goes on within, plus the effects of her incarceration on her friends and family.

Initially I thought it was going to a female person version of Oz, just information technology is far amend than that. Multi-dimensional: funny, sensitive and sometimes nighttime. In that location is heaps of depth to the characters. Clever utilise of pre-prison flashbacks to show what motivates characters in certain situations, and how they got to be in jail. Very sensitively done, it often shows how their personalities were shaped.

This also serves to evidence that you can't simply judge people by their current actions - everyone has heaps of luggage.

Superb performances from a spot-on cast.

And then unlike to what I expected, and very pleasantly so.

Season four continues the good piece of work and was the usual mix of powerful drama and biting one-act. Maybe a bit darker and deeper than previous seasons due to roofing problems of insanity, low, guard brutality and prisoners' lives once they become out of prison. Some characters who didn't go much focus in previous seasons go more of the limelight, while others get less. One of the casualties is Pennsatucky / Doggett (Taryn Manning), which is a shame as she is i of my favourites - multi-layered and funny. On the plus side, Lolly (Lori Petty) gets much more than screen time and she is great: funny and sad, all at the aforementioned fourth dimension.

The last 2 episodes of Flavor iv are incredibly powerful and moving.

Flavour 5 picks upwardly where S4 left off and shows that the writers had certainly non run out of ideas. At a point when about serial start to experience jaded, Orange is the New Black was as potent and fresh equally ever.

However, Season v does mark a turning point, as the prove moves from beingness predominantly character-based to more plot-based. This is a negative affair, as it was the characters and their stories that make the evidence so engaging.

Season 6 is where the novelty starts to habiliment off and the writing starts to show signs of weakness. The setting and situation were new: the Max side of the prison, complete with the more than limited freedom it presents, plus grittier, more dangerous characters. This made for some interesting possibilities and the writers used these adequately well.

However, the character engagement, usually OITNB's strongest feature, is at present largely missing. Tasha Jefferson is the only character whose story is worth following, and this gets fatigued out to the nth degree. Piper Chapman, existence irritating (though I think this was more due to Taylor Schilling's functioning than anything else), was never worth supporting and this flavour is no exception. She does, however, provide the most emotional moment of the flavour.

The lack of engagement in the season is largely due to some previously-likeable/interesting characters being made into irritating characters. The over-the-topness of Red and Lorna's dialogue and general drama constantly fabricated me melody out whenever they appeared.

There are a host of new characters simply none are worth supporting. Their introduction besides dilutes the impact of the characters and stories yous do care about.

Overall Season 6 was watchable but information technology did feel like a chore at times.

The downward trajectory continues in the final season, Flavor 7. Past now it is all plot-based and the engagement levels are close to zilch. The plots themselves experience similar retreads of quondam ones: there'due south very footling new nether the sun. The transformation of previously-likeable characters into irritating characters continues. Lorna is particularly annoying.

In that location was quite a bit of potential though: several of the ex-inmates are now on the outside, so you become to see how the US deals with ex-cons. This was reasonably interesting, as you run across how desperately ex-cons are treated by the system and how the odds are stacked in favour of them going dorsum to jail. Unfortunately, the key character in this is Piper, and she'due south irritating, as always.

The other area that had potential was the sub-plot involving deportees and ICE, as this shows how the US treats illegal immigrants (short respond: not very well). Unfortunately, the writers ruin this by massively overegging the pudding: extreme cases, out-of-the-blue discourse speeches and political finger-pointing. Rather than accost the issues with sensitivity and subtlety, they're rammed down your throat. So preachy.

Season 7 was quite an ordeal to go through. I only put myself through it to see the series through to the end. Even then the writers don't make it like shooting fish in a barrel: thirteen episodes with a ane.v-hr final episode! In full that's about fourteen hours of my life wasted.

Season ratings: Seasons 1-four: 10/10 Season v: 9/10 Season 6: 5/10 Season seven: 3/10

From groundbreaking to a consummate mess

Season 5 is the perfect example of when the prove needs to be over. First 2 seasons were amazing, then we saw a gradual turn down in good storytelling. And season 5 has no mutual thread, all the sometime characters are non fifty-fifty given a gamble to shine. The show seems very disconnected, too many ideas never form into anything interesting. Please let information technology be the last flavor considering it's deadline embarrassing. Laissez passer the word to American Horror Story, and the new Twin Peaks.

Starts out great, ends upwardly atrocious.

First couple season were really amazing, but like a lot of shows, this one overstays its welcome and ends upward becoming incoherent garbage. Tin can't say I recommend it.

Pretty Good!

Orange is the New Blackness is as as expert as everyone says and is definitely worth watching. I was entertained throughout the entire serial. Having said that, I recall Wentworth is the amend prove about a women'southward prison. If yous haven't seen this even so do yourself a favor and go check information technology out!

This has rave reviews and I'm really non sure why.

Alarm: Spoilers

is information technology because of the occasional lesbian sex shown in a very coy fashion ? or is it the odd flashing of a stray breast ?

This is not Oz in a adult female's prison. This is a watered downward prison house soap for people that want to pat themselves on the back for watching something where the discussion cwnt is mentioned occasionally and could been seen as 'shut to the border'.

The characterisation and acting is actually fairly good and the lead character is likable.

The problem is the saturated fat instead of substance. The fact that you lot have to disengage brain too often to watch it. The proposition that well-nigh all prison inmates are mentally challenged simply only one is mentally ill and where the racial stereotypes are laughable.

The blackness population are a cross between whores and comic children's toys where the black doll has floppy hair and does high fives repeatedly. Their speech and patois is a racial parody for American white eye grade to look down on. There isn't one black person with a brain or a motivation apart from deep fried chicken and an impulse to dance at the drop of a chapeau.

A good example being the storyline of the mobile phone hidden in a wall. It's being used for entertaining an inmates young man by her sending him 'shocking' pictures of her punani. Just one minor problem... how does she charge information technology ?

then it's not Oz, it's not close to Oz more's the compassion.

Show went downwards in flames after season iii

Another bear witness that was dragged out for too long. Really the offset two season were interesting and fun, and then information technology steamrolled itself to a terrible ending. By the time it ended, the only grapheme I still cared about was Tasty, who got totally screwed by her friend, who should take told the truth. Piper and Alex, those whiny punks, could have both gotten killed (as characters) and I wouldn't have cared. Merely some other prove that didn't know when to quit.

To Start Out With Anyway, Very Overrated

Alarm: Spoilers

I am chiming in virtually this show considering I am surprised at how positive the reviews are trending for it. After reading positive buzz over the past several months, I have finally had the opportunity to watch Orangish is the New Blackness. And I am very, very unimpressed.

Now, as a disclaimer, I've merely watched the first couple of episodes. So I cannot annotate on the rest of the first season. But from what I did come across, my observations are equally follows:

The Proficient - The premise is undeniably compelling, even if it is for salacious reasons. The title is absurd and clever. Laura Prepon. A unlike role for Kate "Captain Janeway" Mulgrew. It's absurd to support Netflix's pioneering spirit.

The Bad - The writing. The atomic number 82 character and her fiancé. (Those are two HUGE negatives, though.)

I was expecting an intelligent drama. Maybe my expectations were off, or unreasonable. Is this show a blackness comedy? Information technology seems like it at times, but the "sense of humour" is very lowest-common denominator, often employing very cheap-feeling shock value. Others have suggested that this bear witness gets away from clichés...I don't know, possibly in some isolated cases, but on the whole it strikes me every bit extremely clichéd.

The lead graphic symbol is utterly unconvincing, annoying, and uninteresting to me. In the bad sort of style, the not-worth-watching another episode sort of way. Possibly I am being also hasty in my judgment? Overall, I tin can see why this show draws viewers. It is compulsively watchable in a sure way. But not the way that deserves high quality ratings, in my opinion.

I approached Orange is the New Black with an open up listen, by the way. I just experience that information technology is not very adept. Certainly not to be compared with the best shows around. Are we watching the same evidence hither? I applaud Netflix for the effort, but would advise that there is huge room for improvement, based on what I take seen.

A Complete Waste of Time

dk777 25 February 2021

Another bear witness that started out fun and interesting simply to be ruined past bad writing in the terminate.

A show that had potential, fun and interesting characters, and so it'south a real shame it didn't take better writers.

The cast is skilful and the concept is interesting, but it's just non enough and very quickly the prove becomes tedious and boring. With such an interesting plot information technology could accept been actually great.

An interesting concept, the show could have been great, simply the writers destroyed it.

I'chiliad actually sorry for the fourth dimension I lost watching this series, it became so bad and tedious that I couldn't lookout it to the finish. The actors are not bad, only they are not enough to salvage this catastrophe.

A complete waste of time.

This Impressive Drama Features An Extraordinary Cast

Warning: Spoilers

Orange is the New Black is being released on Netflix. I am providing my review afterward watching the first 4 episodes.

Because nigh of the show takes place inside a women'southward prison, this show features an huge female person cast, and it's a wonderful cast. Taylor Schilling plays the lead, Piper Chapman, who has been sentenced to xv years in prison for her part in drug smuggling ten years earlier. Taylor also played the iconic office of Dagny Taggart in Atlas Shrugged. Laura Prepon (That Seventies Show) plays Alex, Piper's ex-girlfriend. Kate Mullgrew plays Red, a Russian émigré who runs the prison house kitchen. Natasha Lyonne plays Nicky a savvy daughter who gets some of the best lines. Yael Stone, who plays Lorna, is a striking presence on screen. There are so many stiff actresses in this production that I can't list them all.

Jason Biggs plays Piper'due south fiancé who must expect for her release to restart their life together.

Orange is the New Blackness is a drama with potent comedic undertones. The New York prison where the women are incarcerated has an atmosphere that might best exist described as sterile, scary and corrupt. As the women deal with the inhumanities of prison life, some seek minor daily pleasures, a few hold onto their hopes for a better life later prison house, and some are hopeless victims of the institution. Most of the latter were victims in the outside world equally well.

Every bit the women are introduced to united states, there are flashbacks detailing their histories and the circumstances that sent them to prison house. Their stories are humanizing. The prison employees also live within the prison civilisation where rules are paramount. They as well are imprisoned during their piece of work hours and must learn to cope with an insensitive surroundings that is also political.

Piper has to learn the rules and the other harsh realities from the first moment she enters Litchfield Prison. Then she has to learn how to cope, making mistakes along the style. Before she was bars, she lived a life at the acme of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs; in prison, the most basic needs cannot be taken for granted. Fifty-fifty the hugs are rationed during visits with family and friends.

As you watch, I think you volition discover that your heart hurts for these women. There are so many themes bachelor to the writers, just central is the fleeting nature of promise.

Tin can honey flourish in prison? I think we will find out.

I rate this show 9/10.

First season was swell, it keeps getting worse now

The start season of this show was really good! The second flavor was okay, the third season was only watchable. Season 4 I had to force myself through the pain of watching until the end and after that I completely gave up, no interest left to watch the new seasons. This could have been a good two to three flavour show, now they're merely trying to drag it out for profits simply I'd be surprised if this show has even half the following it did back when it started. My advice is watch the starting time season and finish there. Trust me, it doesn't get any improve.

Shock factors should never be deliberate

Alarm: Spoilers

The ane star is for some of the characters in this, it is no doubt full of talented actors and actresses but I find a lot of the sex, nudity in this serial is put in there deliberately for stupor gene and it overtakes from any substantial story line. Unlike Breaking Bad, this is not a dark comedy that is effective in combining profound serious problems with humour. It fails at this remarkably in my opinion. I have watched other incredible films that circumduct or take a central focal point around homosexuality - like Brokeback Mountain and Monster - these films do not come across equally trying too hard to be eclectic because there'due south a holistic component to the entire story and its depth. They only just tell the story and the story stands for itself. I guess what I hateful is that it is pretty obvious to a viewer when nudity and sex scenes (be they same sex or not) are trying likewise difficult to be shocking or eclectic to increment viewer send and it gets in the fashion of the story. It's just trying to be too funny, too different and too deliberate with trying to appeal to men'south girl on girl fantasies that the story loses substance.

Excellente !!

Whoah!

What a rollercoaster vii seasons have been! Never have I been so invested in characters on tv set!

Yep it started out every bit a 1-woman show merely I think the creators rightly enlarged the telescopic of OITNB. Soooo many characters yet yous knew them all in such item. Surely even bigger than a soap opera?

Cried a few times too., not actually.

Season iii is really boring

This series has lost its way. Information technology'due south way too focused on the human relationship between Alex and Piper (a real snooze fest) and not focused enough on what makes these characters interesting. In that location is no spark hither anymore. What made seasons i and 2 interesting just isn't there anymore. This story is played out. Time for it to go! And Pennsatucky! Really? Do new teeth completely transform a person? I recall not. By far the nigh interesting graphic symbol on the show, Red, has been reduced to a total stereotype - of the aging tough woman with a heart of gold. She was so interesting earlier and now she is just every bit boring as all of the other characters. Most boring of all is Alex. She was edgy in seasons 1 and 2 and now she is but abrasive - not interesting at all. Did they change writers or producers or did they simply take one good idea and they are stringing information technology out as long as possible? I will say that Crazy Optics continues to be the most fun character to picket - played to perfection!

Information technology'south like the first few seasons of Weeds

It brings back memories of Weeds. You know in its celebrity days. The get-go few seasons before it went off the rails. That's what "Orange Is the New Blackness" is like. Equal parts funny and sad. A mix of true pathos and yet true honesty and beauty coming from the strangest places. Be warned however there is plenty of lesbian sex and if the "F" word makes your ears bleed it is probably a good idea to plough back now...This isn't OZ merely this also isn't Disney. This is a truthful winner from Netflix and tells an interesting story not only from the main character'due south perspective just from the other inmates every bit well. It would take been slow to see things from just her signal of view. Like Nancy Botwin on Weeds, one-time Piper Chapman is portrayed in not and then practiced a lite because she can be the villain in someone else's story.

I savour so many of the characters and everything they get through! I'1000 just at present seeing the final season and then far pretty adept although I retrieve the commencement 5 seasons were the best. Lots of wild personalities, intense episodes, satisfying wins, and bully soundtrack! OITNB is a phenomenal perspective of what it'due south like for women prisoners in many aspects. Lastly I dearest the excitement I feel from the beginning credits, nice mix of jolly and dark.

No more daily soap

Well the concept of women prison house is something new and I started watching it with blank mind. Start is all in all mildly interesting only as the story progresses there is non much to wait. The leading character, Taylor faces multiple dilemmas, most interesting of which is virtually her sexual orientation. She used to be gay in past but she has a boyfriend now..and and then she bumps into her sometime girlfriend in prison.so that is the nearly exciting part. But wait there is balmy one-act too..she comes across a stalker whose weird acting is to exist appreciated the most. The entire season is full of small time accidents and fuss that Taylor comes across. Orange is the new black is not a thriller as a prison house based serial should exist but its close to chick movie. Information technology covers every theme partly and so, it is no more than than a regular time pass daily soap.

1 - v

Warning: Spoilers

What started out every bit a number one has been downsized to a number v flavour iv.. Have not seen the whole season as nonetheless, only the showtime 4 episodes are not almost as skillful as past seasons, hence the rating to number v One major plot pigsty (spoiler alert) is : Doesn't anyone miss the guard who was murdered??? Thus far, NOTHING. Doesn't anyone on the staff or his private life wonder what happened to him? What near his paycheck. What does anyone remember when he just 'vanishes' and doesn't even option upwardly his check!!!! Unless this is addressed subsequently in the season, I volition give this an even lower rating as the flavor progresses... Some of the backstories are non very interesting and just accept up room as what's going on within the prison. Wish the writers, producers or even some bandage members would choice upwardly on this and particularly WHAT HAPPENED TO THAT HIT-Man GUARD!!!!!! Nuff' said except some of the interim is very adept to poor....will non name names!!!

Quickly Degrading

Warning: Spoilers

Season 1 was a refreshing experience. An innocent educated woman sentenced to jail makes up for a nifty story to tell. The plot is centered around Piper's troubles and tribulations in dealing with her new life equally an inmate, information technology made me curious enough to watch the whole season, and I liked information technology. Season one turned out to be very successful, the dramatic/comic entertainment value was undeniable.

Season ii.

Eager to cash in in their success, the producers must have felt the need to extend the life of the series. Their approach is to develop coexisting characters as part of the main plot. Risky business organisation!

And so, we are no longer following Piper, but a bunch of other uninteresting characters that completely change the entertaining tempo of season 1. The intent is to slow down the show in gild to cash in their success. The problem is that they have transformed an interesting story into an inmates soap opera. They endeavour to provide continuity by maintaining a like comical approach to crude situations, and by the already established sexual tensions, mainly on the lesbian side.

I watched season 1 in 2 days, only I can't watch back to back season 2 episodes, I take lost a lot of interest equally I experience manipulated by a degrading plot that no longer appeals to me at any level. I am half fashion into flavour 2, and I doubt that I will stop information technology.

Hilarious and night.

This show is a seriously funny drama.

If you lot similar 'Weeds', 'Breaking Bad' or prefer your sense of humor on the darker side, then give information technology a go... you will not be disappointed.

Very few people create characters like Jenji Kohan... and it is the characters that make this show. Similar 'Weeds', 'Orange' is fresh and original, and similar 'Weeds' the lead grapheme is tragically flawed and hilariously funny.

Well done to Netflix on their latest production... 'Hemlock Grove' is but weird, 'House of Cards' was striking and miss... only it looks like the third time is a amuse. Bravo.

(FYI: humor is how we Brits spell humor). :-)

Too many stereotypes

Warning: Spoilers

This could have been a really good bear witness if the writers had really taken the fourth dimension to do some research on blacks and latinos, instead of relying on stereotypes that are institute on the net. I realize that when information technology comes to the white inmates on the show in that location'southward a good diverseness of characters. Yous accept the meth addicts, and the hillbilly and the trailer trash, and the naïve blond haired blue eyed princess, oh and there'southward fifty-fifty a nun. OK that'due south great, there'due south plenty of diversity there.

Unfortunately the black cast is comprised of nothing only loud, ghetto, uneducated and obese women. The just ii who seem normal are a transsexual and an emotional disturbed inmate dubbed crazy eyes, because in the optics of the creators of the show a black adult female must be a freak in order for her to possess some intelligence. The latina characters didn't turn out any improve. Their characters were all written to be women with multiple children by multiple men, oh yeah and big surprise there is a mother and daughter in prison together. And then freaking stereotypical that information technology'southward embarrassing. This show could have been so much better

All that hype? For this?!?!

Orange is the New Blackness is not the worst testify you could always subject area yourself to, all the same, it is far from the masterpiece the critics are making it out to be. Orangish is the New Black follows Piper as she navigates life from behind bars. The premise is really cool and Jenji Kohan is a great author, so I figured why not? Well, heres why not: the story is unnecessarily convoluted. One episode jumps from ane perspective to the adjacent without every really developing a clear cut idea for what they're trying to show us. The kickoff flavour, still, was more focused on Piper's struggle behind bars and gave a bit abroad nigh those around her. That would be fine for one, Peradventure two episodes but a WHOLE Serial?? Season 2 was very sub-par to the outset. Within the showtime iii episodes, Piper is seen a handful of times and we showtime to shift our focus to other characters such as Lori Piffling. Don't misunderstand me, this is not horrible television. In fact, it is very entertaining simply it, in no way, shape or form is principal class writing or characters. Quite honestly, if Netflix did non produce this show, I couldn't see information technology doing well on any network every bit with most Netflix originals that are not House of Cards. This is merely a stretched out mini-series that hasn't gotten thinned out all the same. Now, I know there are a ton of fans out there that beloved this show and that is cracking merely I'thousand just not one of them. Like Jenji Kohen'southward other show Weeds, after season 3, this will leap the proverbial shark.

The Memoir of Piper Kerman

Warning: Spoilers

Having watched xiii episodes of Season 1, I found this to be a wonderful story about one woman's feel serving a 15 month sentence in a minimum security women's prison house. Based on the memoir of executive consultant, Piper Kerman, this is a story well-nigh Piper, a young woman raised in a white, upper middle form family unit, who completed her education at college, and while looking for a job as a waitress at a local bar, meets and begins a relationship with Alex, played by the statuesque and pretty Laura Prepon. The two immature women alive an adventurous and romantic life for several years globe trotting and drug trafficking for an international drug cartel until they eventually part means. Then, later on ten years, Piper is arrested, tried, and constitute guilty of beingness an cohort to drug trafficking and coin laundering, right when she's settling down with her boyfriend, Larry, played by Jason Biggs. Then, Larry drives his love Piper to prison where Piper surrenders herself to begin her xv month sentence, with the intention of serving her fourth dimension, and then marrying her fiancé, Larry. Just, Piper is a fish out of water in an environment that seeks to teach the difficult lesson of conformity. The cast is amazing, and the storyline well written, with skillful character development through flashbacks. The guards and prison administration are portrayed as corrupt and exploitative in a believable style. The prisoners are multi-dimensional, at times sympathetic, with loyalties that change depending on what is at risk at that moment in time as tribal principles prevail. This story is virtually adaptation and survival as much as it is about finding honey in all the wrong places. And this really happened to someone. I would highly recommend this enjoyable series, and wait forward to Flavour ii.
